Sherma Roberts, PhD

Dr. Sherma Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Hospitality Management at the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management within the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. Her journey has been marked by significant contributions to tourism education, policy development, and regional collaboration. Dr. Roberts obtained her Ph.D. in Sustainable Development with a focus on tourism from Brunel University, UK in 2004. Prior to joining UWI, she taught at universities in the UK, including Manchester Metropolitan University and Buckinghamshire New University. Her expertise spans areas such as tourism planning and development, and she holds a Master’s degree in Tourism Planning & Development from the University of Surrey, UK.
Education Dr. Roberts has been instrumental in raising the profile of tourism education in Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Among her initiatives, she spearheaded a Disney internship program for tourism students, organized the first-ever UWI International Tourism Conference, facilitated opportunities for OECS students to pursue tourism degrees at Cave Hill Campus, and developed a suite of Tourism Masters programs tailored to regional needs. Dr. Roberts actively contributes to policy development. She has served as the Chair of the Tobago Tourism Agency, Chair of the Tourism Advisory Council in Barbados, and Deputy Chair of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority. Her voice is influential in shaping Caribbean tourism through speaking engagements, editorial pieces, and participatory frameworks. Roberts is published in professional peer-reviewed journals and has authored two books with Routledge, UK. Her commitment to advancing tourism education and sustainable practices remains unwavering.
