Sir Hilary McDonald Beckles

Sir Hilary McDonald Beckles serves as the Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI). In this esteemed position, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic direction of the university. His responsibilities include advancing the institution’s reputation, providing strategic leadership, and ensuring efficiency across all campuses. Collaborating with campus principals, Sir Hilary fosters a coherent vision for UWI’s growth and impact in the Caribbean and beyond. 

 

Beyond academia, Sir Hilary is a passionate advocate for social justice. As the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Reparations Commission, he leads efforts to seek justice, recognition, and compensation for the descendants of enslaved Africans. His work focuses on addressing the historical impact of slavery and colonialism on Caribbean nations. Through this role, Sir Hilary aims to create awareness, foster dialogue, and promote reparations as a critical step toward healing and empowerment. 

 

Sir Hilary’s contributions extend beyond administrative roles. He is a distinguished historian, editor, and researcher. His academic research spans topics such as transatlantic slavery, popular culture, and sport. His advocacy for social justice has earned him numerous awards and honorary degrees. Notably, The American Historical Association recognized him as the 2022 Honorary Foreign Member of the Association. His commitment to education, reparations, and human equality continues to make a lasting impact in the Caribbean and beyond.
